Letters #007: The Rescue We Need
It would seem that this year has been one where we’re in search of rescue. Multiple rescues at that- health, political, economic, social… (add the rest to it). As I have watched the past few weeks, months, this year as a whole unfold, one thing is clear to me- we need more than a political, health or social rescue. We need a rescue much more than all of humanity can provide, let alone a single human individual by reason of their power, wealth, acceptance, ideology or status can provide. We need more.
Our outcry in this period points to a longing for perfection which is something God put in us. The desire for that which is good, beautiful and perfect. When we seek perfection in our world as we have in these times especially, it is often a deeper outcry for the one whom we were created for. The one in whose image we are made. We do need better world-systems- political, social, health, economic but the perfection our heart seeks is beyond here and it exists in Christ alone.
One of the things scriptures and my relationship with the Father have done for me is help me understand and gain perspective to happenings. There’s indeed nothing new under the sun. If we look through history (Israel’s story in particular) we’ll see a repetition of humanity’s search for rescue, humanity’s constant search to satisfy our longings. Longings that can only be satisfied fully by God and have been through Christ. The moments we’ve found ourselves in this year and the cries we have and are letting out are nothing entirely new. They are new for us but not for our creator. And he already has provided an answer for us.
For believers of Christ, this is the time to let our lights so shine. Or maybe I should say, this is the time we need to let our lights so shine even more (it’s not a one and done act but a continuous one, done with more intensity and intentionality as the days unravel). This is the time to be beacons, watchmen and guides, leading our world to the one who satisfies our longings and completely rescues us.
Personally, in this period, my heart is fixed on what Paul wrote many years ago, “my little children of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be fully formed in you”. This is the charge I have in this season, to travail until Christ be fully formed in my nation, church and people. And this charge is not for me alone but as many as would want to heed the call. It will play out differently for each one of us but we must not lose sight of the real big picture nor give up. Our rescue is beyond here but it’s also very much readily available and the rescuer needs us to make this known and felt.
Let’s get our focus right and let’s get busy.
Love,
Yami
